Mike Hesson confirmed as new head coach of Pakistan by PCB
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday named Mike Hesson as the new white-ball head coach of the national men’s cricket team, effective 26 May 2025, in a major shake-up aimed at revitalising Pakistan’s limited-overs performance.
Hesson, a seasoned international coach best known for his successful stint with New Zealand, was chosen following an extensive selection process. The position became vacant after Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand in April.
Hesson is currently serving as head coach of Islamabad United, who will look to clinch the HBL Pakistan Super League title once again when the tournament resumes on 17 May.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi welcomed Hesson’s appointment, posting his support on X (formerly Twitter).

Hesson previously coached Kenya and led New Zealand to the 2015 ICC World Cup final alongside then-captain Brendon McCullum.
His analytical approach and calm demeanor have earned him widespread respect in global cricket circles.
In a parallel move, former Pakistan pacer Aqib Javed has been appointed Director High-Performance, reinforcing the board’s ambition to overhaul its cricket infrastructure.
Aqib played 22 Tests and 163 ODIs for Pakistan and previously served in coaching roles, including as an interim head coach of the national team.
Chairman Naqvi confirmed the news on X as well.
To strengthen our cricket infrastructure, Aqib Javed joins us as Director of High Performance, complementing Mike Hesson’s appointment as White-ball Head Coach. Together, they will play a pivotal role in the evolution and success of Pakistan Cricket.
The twin appointments come as Pakistan prepares for a packed white-ball calendar, including the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy and a home ODI series.
Expectations are high that Hesson’s strategic nous and Aqib’s developmental acumen will usher in a new era for Pakistan cricket.
