Charlize Theron is back to protect humanity in The Old Guard 2. Netflix released the official trailer of the action franchise's second instalment on Friday, promising more than just a punch-packing continuation.
The trailer opens with Theron's Andy and Kiki Layne's Nile discussing faux peace and impulsive fighting techniques. Teasing a montage of bloodshed and mystery, it then cuts to the chase by boasting a quietly menacing Uma Thurman portraying the "first of the immortals", as the film puts it.
"Andy leads immortal warriors against a powerful enemy threatening their group. They grapple with the resurfacing of a long-lost immortal, complicating their mission to safeguard humanity," reads the logline of the film, which is based on the graphic novel written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez.
The film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Veronica Ngo, Henry Golding, and Kamil Nozynski. With Victoria Mahoney at the helm, the script is penned by Fernandez, Rucka, and Sarah L Walker.
The first film released on Netflix in 2020 amid uncertainty of the future of cinema due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 72 million households streamed the film in the first four weeks.
The sequel was due before 2025, but Netflix shut down production last year. In an interview with Variety, Theron explained, "Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it."
Fans in the YouTube comments were elated at the franchise's return, grateful to Netflix for not dropping the project as some feared. Excited to see Thurman swinging blades once more, a different user wrote, "Man, it's so good to see Uma wielding a sword after 21 years."
Overall, fans are content with what the film has to offer thus far. Another user wrote, "Actually an underrated movie series and concept. Super pumped for this one. Hope it was as fun to make as it is to watch!"
