Netflix has not yet announced a second season of Forever, the television adaptation of Judy Blume’s 1975 novel. The series, developed by Mara Brock Akil, premiered this month and reimagines the coming-of-age story in 2019 Los Angeles, centring on two young Black protagonists, Keisha and Justin.

Brock Akil told Entertainment Weekly she is open to continuing the story. “There’s absolutely room for that,” she said. “If the audience wants more, I want more. Let’s go do it.”

The season concludes with the couple going their separate ways—Keisha enrolling at Howard University and Justin deferring his admission to Northwestern to focus on music. In a final scene, they bump into each other at a CVS in a moment that’s both bittersweet and hopeful.

Brock Akil emphasised that while sex remains central to the story, the show also addresses themes of identity and survival. “Keisha was his [Justin’s] journey through that to find what desire feels like,” she explained. She added that for young Black men and women, the stakes around relationships often carry deeper social and emotional weight. “For a Black mother raising a Black boy, I’m most concerned with: Is he going to live in this modern era?”

She noted the ending reflects a mature parting, not a destructive breakup. “Though they broke up to go their separate ways… they did it in love,” she said, adding that a possible reunion would also be rooted in love.

If renewed, season two would likely follow Keisha and Justin as they navigate early adulthood and potentially reconnect. Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. are expected to return in the lead roles, alongside supporting cast members including Xosha Roquemore, Karen Pittman, and Wood Harris.
