GUJRANWALA:

A man shot dead at least five people, including his nephew, and injured another, in the Tatlay Aali area on Tuesday morning. According to officials, the killer was shot dead in a police encounter after the incident, while the SHO of Tatlay Aali was severely injured.

The attack took place early in the morning in the village of Urtali Virkan near Tatlay Aali. The attacker, Imran Sher, killed five people, including his nephew, and injured another over an enmity.

The police officials said Imran, who was a drug addict, had a quarrel with his nephew Usman, following which he opened fire at Usman and his friends.

Usman, Waqas, Imran, Afzal and Omar were killed, while Salman was severely injured in the attack.

As soon as information about the attack was received, a large contingent of police, including SSP Operation Rizwan Tariq reached the spot and cordoned off the area so that the attacker could not escape.

The SHO received information that the killer had taken refuge in a school along with an accomplice.

When the police reached the spot, Imran tried to flee along with his accomplice.

SHO Safdar Atta Bhatti tried to apprehend him as he had arrested Imran earlier in a firing case and recognised him.

However, Imran opened fire and the SHO of Tatlay Aali police station suffered two bullet wounds in the leg.

The suspect was killed when the police resorted to retaliatory firing, while his associate was injured and caught.

The injured official was shifted to the district headquarters hospital.

Regional Police Officer Tayyab Hafeez Cheema and CPO Rana Ayaz Saleem visited the injured SHO.

The CPO said the brother of the victim Usman, who is a lawyer, had also acquired bail for him a few days earlier.

He said an investigation into the incident was under way.

He said the attacker killed in the encounter had a criminal record.
