Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Waqar Mehdi on Tuesday secured victory in the Senate by-election for a general seat from Sindh, following the death of Senator Taj Haider.

According to a spokesperson for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Mehdi received 111 votes, defeating Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) candidate Nighat Mirza, who polled 36. Two votes were rejected due to incorrect marking.

The polling was held at the Sindh Assembly from 9 am to 4 pm without any break. Provincial Election Commissioner and Returning Officer Ejaz Anwar Chauhan confirmed that 149 lawmakers cast their votes during the process.

The Senate seat had fallen vacant after the passing of PPP’s veteran lawmaker Taj Haider. Mehdi will now serve in the upper house of Parliament until March 2027.
