Jagmeet Singh resigns as NDP leader after election loss

Canada’s pro-Khalistan political figure Jagmeet Singh announced he will step down as leader of New Democratic Party (NDP) after conceding defeat in his Burnaby Central riding, marking the end of a pivotal chapter in Canadian progressive politics.

Holding back tears during an emotional speech at the NDP election night event, Singh thanked supporters, his family, and paid tribute to the values he championed. “I love this party, I love this country, and I am forever hopeful about our future,” he said, his voice breaking multiple times.

Singh confirmed he would remain in his role temporarily until a new leader is chosen, ensuring a smooth transition for the party. He congratulated newly elected Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying Carney has "an important job to do" to safeguard Canada “from the threats of Donald Trump” a nod to growing anxieties about Trump's influence over North American politics.

Singh’s resignation follows a tough election night for the NDP, as the party lost key seats across Canada. Despite the loss, Singh’s speech was widely praised for its grace, dignity, and heartfelt message about public service and resilience.

The NDP will now initiate a formal leadership selection process as it prepares to regroup and rebuild ahead of future elections.
