Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab has said that work is underway on water recycling, through which 35 million gallons per day (MGD) of fresh water will be conserved. This recycled water will help save clean water that can then be supplied to hospitals and mosques.
Speaking at a ceremony on Tuesday to distribute 5,000 plants for tree plantation around Shahrah-e-Bhutto, organised by the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), the mayor said that reforms have been introduced in the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to improve its performance. He explained that the K-IV water project comprises two parts - the first is being developed by the federal government in collaboration with WAPDA and will bring water up to the Chilya point. From there, the Sindh government will carry the water to the city through an augmentation plan.
Wahab noted that in 2016, when the Chief Minister of Sindh allocated funds to industrial development companies, representatives of industrial zones utilised those funds to improve their local infrastructure. He emphasised that while soft encroachments in the city are removed, they often reappear - and complete eradication won't be possible without public support. He urged people to stop shopping from street vendors and instead buy from tax-paying shops to discourage illegal encroachments.
