Lionsgate has released the first official image from Day Drinker, a new thriller starring Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, and Madelyn Cline. The film, now in production in Spain, marks Depp’s return to a leading role following years of legal disputes and limited on-screen appearances.
Directed by Marc Webb, known for 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man, the film tells the story of a private-yacht bartender, played by Cline, who encounters a mysterious passenger portrayed by Depp. The encounter spirals into a complex web involving a criminal figure played by Cruz.
Webb praised the cast and setting in a statement: “I’m excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penélope, and this incredible cast. We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun.”
This project marks the fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz, who previously worked together on Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express. They are joined by Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle in supporting roles.
Day Drinker is produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, best known for the John Wick franchise, along with Adam Kolbrenner and Zach Dean, who also wrote the screenplay.
The production features a high-calibre crew including director of photography Javier Aguirresarobe, production designer Jan Roelfs, and costume designer Penny Rose. The film is expected to wrap production later this year.
