A police constable stationed at the Ratta Amral police checkpost in Rawalpindi has been booked for allegedly assaulting a citizen in front of the post in-charge and other police personnel.
According to an FIR registered in connection with the case, the incident also revealed that the police staff allegedly demanded and received Rs10,000 in exchange for releasing a detained motorcycle mechanic.
A resident of Pindora named Malik Shoaib stated that the mother of a local motorcycle mechanic named Haider informed him that her son had been detained by the Ratta Amral police.
Shoaib, along with a few respected members of the community, went to the police checkpost to inquire about the reason for Haider's arrest.
Shoaib claimed that they made contact with the post in-charge around 11:15pm, who told them to wait for further information.
While they were waiting, a constable identified as Babar allegedly approached and began arguing with Shoaib, using offensive language. When Shoaib asked the constable to refrain from misbehaving, Babar allegedly began to physically assault him in full view of the checkpost in-charge and other staff.
Shoaib further alleged that he later paid Rs10,000 to Constable Babar to secure Haider's release.
He described the conduct of the police personnel as a serious abuse of power.
