Babar Azam defends 'silence' on Pakistan's recent struggles

Babar Azam engaged in a tense exchange with a journalist during the HBL PSL captains press conference, defending his decision to remain silent on Pakistan cricket’s recent poor performances.

The former Pakistan captain was visibly frustrated after being asked whether he would only speak up once Pakistan cricket was "finished."

The question followed a string of disappointing results, including group-stage exits from the Champions Trophy and a recent 0-3 ODI series defeat to New Zealand.

Responding to the line of questioning, Babar said:

“Jaha mujhe bolna hoga, waha main bolta hu. Aur main media pe baithke nahi bolunga ki kya karna chahiye. Mujhe jaha jo bolna hota hain main kamre ke andar bol deta hu. Main yaha aake dhindora nahi pitunga ki social media me ye honi chahiye, ye meri job nahi hain.”
(Where I need to speak, I speak. I don’t need to sit in the media to say what should be done. If something needs to be said, I say it behind closed doors. I won’t come here and make a scene on social media. That’s not my job.)

The exchange took place just days before the start of Pakistan Super League Season 10, where Babar will lead Peshawar Zalmi. Zalmi are set to face Quetta Gladiators on Saturday, April 12, at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The reporter’s question referenced Pakistan's recent form, including a 1-4 T20I series defeat in New Zealand. Despite being the side’s top scorer in the ODI leg with 129 runs across three matches, Babar was dropped for the T20Is — a move that also stirred debate among fans and analysts.

Babar’s reaction reflected broader frustrations over how public figures are expected to comment on national matters. While some on social media applauded the batter’s composure, others debated whether his response indicated a lack of accountability.

With HBL PSL 10 set to begin on April 11, Babar's focus now shifts to leading Zalmi through a strong campaign.

Peshwar Zalmi will begin their campaign on April 12 against Quetta Gladiators.
