The White Lotus season 3 finale shocks fans as rumors swirl of off-screen feud between Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins

The emotional season 3 finale of HBO’s The White Lotus left audiences stunned with the tragic deaths of Rick and Chelsea—but now, fans are shifting their focus from the show’s fictional heartbreak to a potential real-life rift between stars Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood.
In the finale, Rick (Goggins) seeks revenge on resort owner Jim Hollinger (Scott Glenn), believing him to be his father's killer. In a devastating twist, Rick realizes too late that he’s killed his own father. The ensuing chaos results in Chelsea’s (Wood) death by a stray bullet and Rick’s death at the hands of a security guard. The haunting final shot of their bodies floating in a pond, framed like a Yin and Yang symbol, sealed what many are calling one of the series’ most tragic moments.

Series creator Mike White reflected on the storyline, calling it “a classic theme of Greek tragedy.” He explained on The White Lotus podcast, “Chelsea has this kind of romantic fatalism about their relationship, and you want to buy into it.” In her final plea to Rick, Chelsea says: “Stop fixating on the love you didn’t get. Think about the love you have. I’m right here!”
While the fictional love story left many devastated, off-screen speculation about the actors’ dynamic is creating just as much buzz. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Wood and Goggins no longer follow each other on Instagram. “Aimee Lou Wood follows 5,160 people on Instagram and none of them are Walton Goggins,” one fan pointed out on X.

Adding to the mystery, Goggins posted a heartfelt tribute to the show, tagging most of his co-stars—but noticeably excluding Wood. “Walton Goggins not tagging Aimee but tagging everyone else… WHAT HAPPENED,” one Reddit user wrote. Another fan chimed in: “They used to idolize each other and talk about each other in such positive light in interviews… It’s so weird that all of a sudden there’s this switch up.”
However, the signs aren’t all negative. Goggins also posted an 18-slide Instagram Story of behind-the-scenes moments with Wood, set to Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Springs.” In a separate post, he wrote: “With the heaviest of hearts… To me, ours was a love story. It was only ever a love story, hindered by unresolved, childhood trauma. Thank you Aimee Lou for being my partner… a journey I will never forget.”
Wood also shared her own tribute to the characters’ journey, calling it “nuts” but sweet in its own way. “Both can be true. It’s all of it,” she wrote, adding that Rick and Chelsea’s “self-destructiveness” ultimately led to their downfall.
Still, some fans were less forgiving of Rick’s character, questioning his treatment of Chelsea and the age gap in their relationship. “Chelsea dying over a man twice her age? You’ll pay for this, Mike White,” one fan posted. Another added, “[Rick] gave [Chelsea] nothing the entire time and got her killed in the end.”

Music critic Carl Wilson offered a more grounded view, suggesting fans might be reading too much into social media clues. “Everyone on here reading tea leaves on Walton Goggins & Aimee Lou Wood clearly has never met actors, who are constantly emotionally over the top with each other, until they move on to their next job and don’t even keep in touch,” he wrote.
