Elisabeth Moss didn’t leave the set of The Handmaid’s Tale empty-handed. At the red carpet premiere of the sixth and final season, the Emmy-winning actress revealed she helped herself to a handful of props from the iconic Hulu series.
“I looted the place,” Moss told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. “I have a full-set handmaid’s costume — I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, it’s not like I’m going to wear it,” she added with a laugh. “I have a Scrabble board; I’ve got a lot. I took as much as I could; don’t tell anyone.”
Moss wasn’t the only cast member to walk away with a souvenir. Yvonne Strahovski said she held onto Serena Joy’s leather finger, calling it “a winner,” while Madeline Brewer kept Janine’s iconic eyepatch. “I walked right off of set and put all my stuff in my bag and got the hell out of there,” Brewer admitted.
Even co-showrunner Eric Tuchman confessed to sneaking off with a full “bonnet-to-boots” handmaid costume, which he said now lives in his closet.
But beyond the nostalgic trinkets, the cast also spoke seriously about the show’s resonance in today’s political climate. “Unfortunately we need The Handmaid’s Tale more than ever,” said Brewer. “We need to show that there’s certain inextinguishable flames inside a person that just can’t be taken away.”
Bradley Whitford echoed that sentiment, reflecting on how far reality has come since the show’s debut in 2017. “The idea that Roe v. Wade was going to be overturned was inconceivable,” he said. “Forced births are happening now and it’s very upsetting. The heart of this show is June understanding that despair is a luxury her children can’t afford and action is the antidote to despair.”
Samira Wiley added, “It’s definitely nothing that I wanted, for this second term to happen; it’s definitely nothing I ever would have imagined, but I do think that this show, as always, is meeting the world and America where it is.”
The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 begins streaming on Hulu April 8.
