KARACHI:

The demon of high prices on the loose throughout Ramazan went out of control on the eve of Eid with sudden jump in the rates of poultry, mutton and beef.

Meat and poultry traders besides the vegetable wholesalers increased the prices arbitrarily without any notice or government notification.

Chicken meat took a flight of Rs200 jumping from Rs640 to more than Rs800 per kg. The price of beef with bones escalated from Rs1,200 to Rs14,00, and that of boneless from Rs1,400 to Rs1,700. Mutton was sold for Rs2,800 as against Rs2,200.

Profiteers were charging arbitrary prices as if to celebrate the festive occasion on account of the customers.

Tomato finally got back its lost glory. A few weks ago it was selling for Rs40 per kg and at some bazaars even Rs25 per kg, however, the advent of Eid pushed its price to Rs100-120. Garlic and ginger were sold for Rs600 to Rs700 per kg, almost Rs150 above the normal rates.

According to the citizens, the profiters got a free hand on Eid, and they have taken on the chand rat. On Sunday, there was a rush of customers in all the major and regional markets of the city. Citizens shopped to serve guests on the three days of Eid.

Citizens queued up at shops selling pure milk until late at night.
