India welcomes US 'terror' label for Indian Mujahideen

NEW DELHI: India on Friday welcomed a decision by the US State Department to designate the homegrown militant group Indian Mujahideen a terrorist organisation.

"The US designation reflects our shared commitment to combat terrorism," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash.

Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for numerous bomb attacks in Indian cities in recent years, and is one of the suspects in the investigation into a blast earlier this month outside the Delhi High Court that left 14 dead.

Announcing the addition of Indian Mujahideen to its terror list on Thursday, the US State Department noted the outfit's "close ties" with Pakistan-based militant groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba -- blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The Indian Mujahideen "is responsible for dozens of bomb attacks throughout India since 2005, and has caused the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians," it said.
