The Lahore Traffic Police has recruited two transgender individuals as Victim Support Officers to assist in the crackdown against organised begging, particularly among women and transgender individuals.
The newly appointed officers, Muskan and Khusboo, will work alongside traffic police teams to identify and take action against female beggars across the city. Their responsibilities include raising awareness about anti-begging operations and encouraging members of the transgender community to seek lawful means of livelihood.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to dismantle organised begging networks in Lahore. The Traffic Police has also activated its Lady Traffic Warden Education Wing, which will conduct targeted crackdowns against female beggars.
Offenders will be detained and either transferred to nearby police stations or rehabilitated at welfare organizations such as Edhi Homes.
Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) has emphasised a strict yet rehabilitative approach, stating, "Our goal is not just to eliminate begging but to provide sustainable solutions for those affected." He further noted that the initiative aims to address the root causes of street begging while ensuring the dignity and welfare of marginalized communities.
Rights activists termed the move significant for the inclusion of transgender individuals in law enforcement.
