The government has moved to strengthen birth registration system in the province in a bid to enhance child protection and ensure access to essential services. A high-level meeting, presided over Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, reviewed measures for improving birth registration rates on Thursday.
The CS stressed the critical importance of birth registration in securing children's rights, including access to healthcare, immunisation, and education. He announced that the provincial government is preparing amendments to the Sindh Local Government Act 2013 to make birth registration mandatory, a move aimed at achieving universal child registration in the province.
"Birth registration is the first legal acknowledgment of a child's existence and is fundamental to safeguarding their rights," CS Shah stated.
The provincial government has already abolished fees for birth registration, removing financial barriers for underprivileged families. Officials were briefed that under the Sindh Local Government Act 2013, the Local Government Department holds the mandate for registering births, marriages, divorces, and deaths.
