Amid the legal battle between It Ends with Us leads Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, another Colleen Hoover story is gearing up for a film adaptation. As per Variety, Amazon MGM Studios' Verity is set to hit theatres on May 15, 2026.
Helmed by Michael Showalter, the psychological thriller stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordóva, and Brady Wagner. After the involvement of multiple writers, including Hoover, the current screenplay is being penned by Nick Antosca.
The film's logline reads, "Struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh is hired as a ghostwriter for renowned author Verity Crawford under mysterious circumstances, but her assignment takes a dark turn after discovering chilling autobiographical notes. Faced with a series of deadly family secrets, Lowen struggles to separate fiction from reality, while also blurring the lines with Verity's husband, Jeremy."
Earlier, shots from the set in New York City circulated online, showing Johnson with a splatter of fake blood on her face while Hartnett stood close by. Readers speculate that the two were filming a car accident scene that takes place in the beginning of the story.
Hoover, Antosca, Hathaway, and Showalter are also producing the project along with Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, and Jordana Mollick, with Johnson, Lauren Levine, and Kerry Orent as the executive producers.
Hoover published the novel of the same name in 2018, and about three years later, Verity was acquired by Grand Central Publishing. Spending months on the New York Times Best Sellers list, the novel sold more than one million copies in 2023 alone.
More on the way
Aside from the upcoming Verity and the summer sleeper hit It Ends with Us, other Hoover stories awaiting their run on the big screen are Regretting You and Reminders of Him, as per Deadline.
The contemporary romance Regretting You, which was published almost a year after Verity, follows the story of a mother preventing her teenage daughter from repeating the generational cycle of mistakes.
Allison Williams is set to play the mother, Morgan Grant, while McKenna Grace will star as the daughter, Clara. Dave Franco will portray Morgan's beau Jonah, who enters the picture after her husband's death. As of now, the film adaptation is expected to arrive in theatres on October 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, the film adaptation of Reminders of Him is slated for a 2026 release. Distributed by Universal, it will follow the story of Hoover's most recent novel, with screenplay from the author and Levine.
Published in 2022, the story focuses on Kenna Rowan, a troubled young mother seeking redemption after being released from prison. Shunned by all those keeping her away from her four-year-old daughter, Kenna finds comfort in bar owner Ledger Ward, who helps her out in connecting with her daughter.
While not much is known about the adaptation at this stage, Maika Monroe has been tapped to star in the film while Vanessa Caswill is attached to direct it.
Eventful year
While Hoover is gearing up for a hopeful future, her recent success has not been without its challenges. In January, she quietly deactivated her Instagram account, following Lively's sexual harassment complaint against Baldoni, months after the release of romance drama It Ends with Us.
Soon after, rumours about the author's retirement began emerging. Although her Instagram account is back online, Hoover has yet to comment on the retirement rumours.
