A viral video of former world boxing champion Saweety Boora assaulting her husband, ex-Indian Kabaddi captain and Arjuna awardee Deepak Hooda, inside a Hisar police station has escalated their marital dispute into a legal battle.
The video shows Boora sitting in the police station alongside Hooda and several others before abruptly getting up and striking him. The incident led Hooda to file a complaint the next day, prompting an FIR against Boora on March 16.
However, the conflict had already reached the legal system, as an earlier FIR was lodged against Hooda in February based on Boora’s complaint of dowry harassment.
Hooda faces multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including voluntarily causing hurt, criminal breach of trust, and criminal intimidation. Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan confirmed the registration of the FIR.
Boora, who won gold at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, has accused Hooda and his family of dowry-related harassment, claiming they insulted and physically assaulted her.
She alleged that her family spent approximately INR 1 crore on the wedding, including INR 11.59 lakh borrowed to fulfill a demand for a Fortuner SUV just days before the marriage.
Hooda, who was part of the Indian kabaddi team that won gold at the 2016 South Asian Games, has countered these allegations. He claims Boora distanced herself from him after he received the Arjuna Award on December 17, 2024.
Additionally, he has accused Boora and her sister of taking gold and cash worth lakhs from his Rohtak flat while he was in Delhi on February 3. His complaint, filed in Rohtak, also alleges mental harassment, criminal intimidation, and cheating.
The Rohtak police have referred the financial allegations to the Economic Offences Wing for further investigation.
Sources indicate that tensions in the couple’s marriage worsened after Hooda’s defeat in the 2024 Assembly elections, where he contested from Rohtak on a BJP ticket. He alleges that an attempt to reconcile on February 9 ended with him being abused by Boora’s father and uncle.
While Hisar police continue investigating Boora’s allegations, Rohtak police are handling Hooda’s complaint. Efforts to obtain a statement from Boora have been unsuccessful, while Hooda has declined to comment, calling it a “family issue.” The couple married in July 2022.
