Traveling the world in today’s era can feel like navigating a global minefield, with personal security top of mind for many globetrotters. In response to growing concerns, crowdsourced data platform Numbeo has released its 2025 safety index, listing the world’s safest countries for travel based on crime levels.

Andorra, the tiny European country nestled between Spain and France, has claimed the top spot, earning an impressive safety score of 84.7. With a population of just 82,638 and covering only 181 square miles, Andorra boasts low crime rates, making it an ideal destination for travelers prioritizing safety.

Following Andorra are the United Arab Emirates (84.5), Qatar (84.2), Taiwan (82.9), and Oman (81.7), all of which earned high marks for personal security. Saudi Arabia (76.1) and China (76.0) were also ranked within the top 15, while Bahrain and South Korea followed closely behind.

Pakistan, ranked slightly above India, took the 65th spot with a safety score of 56.3, while India followed closely at 66th with a score of 55.7. However, some traditionally considered safe destinations did not fare well in the rankings.

Australia, ranked 82nd with a safety index of 52.7, and New Zealand, ranked 86th with a score of 51.8, placed lower than expected. The United Kingdom followed at 87th, with Malaysia just behind. The United States, often considered one of the safest countries, ranked a surprising 89th with a safety score of 50.8.

France, ranked 110th with a score of 44.6, was placed well below many of its European neighbors, while countries like Bangladesh and Yemen ranked even lower at 126th and 130th, respectively.

Venezuela was rated as the most dangerous country, sitting at the bottom of the list with a safety index of just 19.3. The country’s political unrest further exacerbates safety concerns, with violent crackdowns on anti-government protests often resulting in looting and vandalism.

The bottom five for safety were rounded out by Papua New Guinea (19.7), Haiti (21.1), Afghanistan (24.9), and South Africa (25.3).

Numbeo’s safety index, derived from surveys conducted by visitors to its platform, factors in crime rates, including incidents of theft, robbery, harassment, and violent crimes. The data aims to give travelers a clearer picture of the safety landscape across different countries, allowing them to make informed decisions.

However, Numbeo was quick to remind users that the safety index is based on user-contributed data and perceptions, which may differ from official government statistics.
