Virat Kohli began the 2025 IPL season with a commanding 59 off 36 balls, guiding Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to a seven-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with 23 balls to spare.

Chasing 175, Kohli and Phil Salt set the tone with a 95-run stand in 51 balls as RCB raced to 80 in the powerplay.

Salt contributed 56 off 31 balls, while Rajat Patidar’s explosive 34 off 16 balls, at a strike rate of 212.50, sealed the chase. Kohli, striking at 163.89, hit four boundaries and three sixes, taking an early lead in the Orange Cap race.

Kohli reaches 1000 IPL runs vs KKR

Kohli became the first batter to score 1000 IPL runs against four teams, adding KKR to his tally alongside CSK, PBKS, and DC. He now has 1021 runs in 32 innings against KKR, averaging 40.84 with a strike rate of 133.63, including one century and seven half-centuries.

No other player has crossed the 1000-run mark against more than two teams:

Batter 1000+ Runs Against
Virat Kohli DC, CSK, PBKS, KKR
David Warner PBKS, KKR
Rohit Sharma KKR, DC
Shikhar Dhawan CSK

As RCB faces DC, KKR, and CSK later this season, Kohli has the chance to top the all-time runs list against a single franchise, currently led by David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.

Other notable IPL milestones

Other notable IPL milestones include Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and RCB remaining the only founding IPL teams without a batter scoring 1000 runs against them.

Kohli leads the charts against RR with 764 runs and is the third-highest scorer against MI with 855, while KL Rahul, with 950 runs against MI, could become the first to reach the 1000-run mark. MS Dhoni holds the record for the most runs against RCB with 864.

Kohli also extended his record as the longest-serving player with a single IPL franchise, having played for RCB since 2008. Dhoni, apart from two seasons with Rising Pune Supergiants, has been with CSK since 2008, while Rohit Sharma is set for his 15th season with MI.

Additionally, Kohli marked his 400th T20 match in the game against KKR, becoming the third Indian after Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik to reach this milestone. Dhoni is expected to join this list later in IPL 2025.
