Rachel Zegler was fiercely defended online after a social media user attempted to shame her for having visible back hair in a resurfaced photo. The incident began when X (formerly Twitter) user David Santa Carla shared an image of the actress from the 2022 Hollywood Reporter Emmy Party, mocking her natural body hair and linking it to Disney’s supposed financial woes.
“This is why Disney is about to lose $300MM…” the user wrote, followed by, “Back hair on women gives me the ick.” While a handful of commenters agreed, the backlash was swift and widespread. Users, particularly women, called out the unrealistic beauty standards and lack of basic understanding about women’s bodies. One responded, “Lemme guess… you’re a virgin,” while another wrote, “Local man finds out women have body hair. Stay tuned for more information.”
This isn’t the first time Zegler has addressed public comments about her body hair. Following a similar remark about her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala, she responded, “No I think hair is natural and cool!!!!!!!!” She’s also previously celebrated body hair, tweeting in 2019, “The hair on our arms is gorgeous and should be worshipped thank u amen.”
The rising star continues to challenge beauty norms both online and in her work. Zegler is set to star in Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White, releasing on March 21. While the film has sparked debates around representation and storytelling choices, Zegler remains firm in embracing authenticity and pushing back against narrow expectations in Hollywood.
Despite the noise, her message is clear: body hair is normal — and no one should be shamed for it.
