Women receive 39% of scholarships: HEC

ISLAMABAD:

As many as 39% of the 340,000 scholarships have been awarded to female students, according to the Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) during a briefing to the National Assembly Special Committee on Women's Rights.

The HEC chairman said that there are 269 universities in the country, 19 of which exclusively enroll women. Highlighting opportunities for women in higher education, he said around 40 per cent university staff across the country consists of women. Women are exhibiting academic excellence as they are ranked among top students during convocations.

The HEC chairman said laptops will be distributed among students of Allama Iqbal Open University and Virtual University in phase four. He said the HEC drafted a policy against harassment of women and forwarded it to the universities for enforcement.

In addition, Ministry of Education Secretary Mohiuddin Wani said previously women were not part of selection committee but it is now mandatory to have female representation. More female students are enrolling in Computer Science and IT departments. He said the project of setting exam papers with the help of AI has proven to be successful.
