PESHAWAR:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly's 5th session, which lasted for eight months amid concerns over its possible dissolution, has finally been adjourned indefinitely.

During the session, the Assembly not only completed the mandatory 100 days of proceedings for the first parliamentary year but also covered a significant number of days for the second year.

The fifth session of the provincial Assembly began on July 19, 2024, and was prolonged for eight months through periodic adjournments. Reports suggested that the provincial government feared the Centre might suspend the Assembly as a punitive measure against Ali Amin Gandapur's government.

To prevent this, the session was kept ongoing, as no action could be taken against the Assembly while it was in session. As a result, the proceedings continued uninterrupted. The Speaker had initially adjourned the session until April 7.

However, on the night of March 18, sudden orders were issued to adjourn the session indefinitely. The manner of adjournment sparked controversy, as the notification issued bore the date of March 14, despite the actual decision being made on March 18.

The Assembly Secretariat clarified that since the summary was sent to the Speaker on March 14, the approval to adjourn the session indefinitely was also considered effective from that date, which is why the notification was issued accordingly.

During the prolonged session, several important bills were passed, and various resolutions, adjournment motions, privilege motions, and call attention notices were addressed. Ministers and government representatives also responded to numerous queries raised in the house.
