The defense fund for Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering former UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, has now exceeded $722,000, with a recent $36,500 donation from an anonymous supporter.

According to the New York Post, this single donation is the largest contribution to date, signaling a growing wave of financial and public support for Mangione. The donor reportedly cited the unity of public sentiment around the case as their reason for contributing.

Despite the strong evidence against Mangione, the outpouring of support has drawn attention from legal analysts. NewsNation legal contributor Jesse Weber, who also hosts on the Law & Crime Network, expressed his shock at the unprecedented fundraising effort.

“I've never seen anything like this,” Weber said on Elizabeth Vargas Reports. “People are not necessarily raising money because they believe in his innocence but because they support what he allegedly did.”

Weber noted that in many cases, public fundraising occurs when evidence is weak or when a defendant is facing the death penalty under questionable circumstances. However, in Mangione’s case, supporters appear to be backing him despite strong evidence.

As Mangione’s case progresses, the surge in financial backing continues to fuel debate about the motives behind such overwhelming support.
