KARACHI:

Rampant increase in the violation of traffic laws has led to the alarming rise in road accidents. Moreover, inefficient traffic police, lack of education regarding human rights and road safety among citizens, as well as battered roads are added sources to the rising incidents of road mishaps.

Over-speeding, wrong-way movement, jumping traffic lights, unnecessary hast and losing patience by motorists have become an uncontrollable nuisance.

If the Ulema, in their Friday, Ramazan and other sermons, talk about human rights and civic sense and tell people that hurting others is punishable in this world and hereafter then people might chose the straight path.

More than 160 people have died and over 2,000 have been injured in traffic accidents so far this year. The main reason for this is the negligence and indifference of the traffic police, due to which traffic rules are not implemented. The roads are also in battered condition. The Sindh government and local bodies do not seem serious at all in this regard.

Regional Planner Dr. Syed Nawaz Al-Hadi says that there is no writ of law in Sindh, especially in Karachi. The government has failed in every matter. In such a situation, scholars, civil society, celebrities and responsible citizens should peacefully stand up for the protection of their lives and properties. And an awareness campaign should be organised for civic sense, especially road safety education.

According to a survey, conducted by The Express Tribune and information received from other sources, the provincial government has never run a road safety education campaign in a proper manner.
