Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, has disclosed that fellow artist Chris Brown was the only celebrity who financially assisted him with legal fees.Lanez made the revelation through his recently released prison-recorded album, PETERSON.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, claimed in the album that when his accounts were frozen, he struggled to secure the $250,000 required for legal representation for his appeal. In a track titled T.D.F (feat. DSTNY) x LA County Jail, he expressed gratitude for Brown’s unexpected support, rapping, "Only real n**a that helped me was Chris Brown, that really my brother, bruh."*
In another track, Free Tory, Lanez explained that while most of his industry peers ignored his pleas for help, Brown stepped in without hesitation. According to Lanez, Brown provided financial assistance with no conditions, simply wishing him well and hoping for his release.
Having faced public scrutiny himself following his 2009 assault case involving Rihanna, Brown may have empathized with Lanez’s struggles in navigating legal battles and industry backlash. The two artists have previously collaborated on music, and their connection appears to extend beyond the studio.
Despite his incarceration, Lanez remains active in music, using his lyrics to share his struggles and keep his fan base engaged. His latest project, PETERSON, offers a raw insight into his legal fight, personal reflections, and the people who supported or distanced themselves from him.
