Lauren Sanchez, fiancée of billionaire Jeff Bezos, is gearing up for an historic journey into space with the first all-female crew on one of Blue Origin's rockets.
The crew, which includes pop star Katy Perry, CBS anchor Gayle King, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn, will embark on this groundbreaking mission in spring 2025.
On March 7, Sanchez shared a special moment with her followers via an Instagram reel, showing the first video call with her fellow astronauts.
In the clip, Sanchez, a licensed pilot, introduces the crew to the world. "I really believe that all of these women are storytellers," she says before joining the meeting. "They're gonna come back and be able to share that story and also inspire a new generation of explorers."
Upon joining the call, Sanchez encouraged her team, saying, "I just kind of want everyone to take a deep breath and soak this all in for a second. Today, you guys, we're a crew!"
During the call, Gayle King, 70, voiced her nerves about the upcoming flight, asking, "Is anyone else nervous? Or am I the only nervous Nelly?" Katy Perry, 40, responded, "I'll be a little nervous, but I'll be looking at y'all."
Sanchez, ever the motivator, reassured the group, stating, "We're all gonna come back with this profound love of Earth, and we're gonna be able to share that with the world and hopefully touch everyone in a small way that they'll wanna help save the planet."
In her Instagram caption, Sanchez expressed her excitement for the mission, writing, "Our first call as a crew! Wow, what an incredible group of women. I cannot wait to embark on this adventure together and inspire the next generation of explorers. Excited to share our journey with you. This is just the beginning. #takingupspace."
The all-female crew will make their historic flight in the spring of 2025, following in the footsteps of Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who made history in 1963 as the first woman to fly solo into space.
