Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died a week apart in their New Mexico home, with investigators revealing that the Oscar-winning actor may not have known about his wife's passing due to his advanced Alzheimer’s.

The couple was found dead in their Santa Fe home on February 26, prompting initial suspicions. However, Chief Medical Examiner Heather Jerrell confirmed on Friday that both died of natural causes.

Arakawa, 65, reportedly passed away first due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare but deadly virus often transmitted by rodents. She was found in the bathroom with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered nearby. The condition primarily affects the lungs and can be fatal.

Hackman, 94, was later found near the entryway of their home. His cause of death was attributed to heart disease, with his Alzheimer’s playing a contributing role. Given the timeline, authorities believe the Unforgiven actor may not have been aware of his wife’s death.

Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, retired from acting in 2004. His passing marks the end of an era for Hollywood, with tributes pouring in from fans and colleagues.
