Naomi Osaka endured a disappointing return to competition at Indian Wells, suffering a 6-4, 6-4 first-round defeat to Camila Osorio.

The four-time Grand Slam champion, playing her first match since retiring injured at the Australian Open in January, later described the performance as the "worst match I've ever played in my life."

Osaka, 27, initially downplayed the result in her post-match press conference, acknowledging her struggles but viewing the loss as a "little bump in the road." However, she took to social media to express her frustration, writing on Threads, "Wow, I'm so sorry to everyone who watched that."

The former world No. 1 has battled injuries since returning from maternity leave in 2024, with limited time to practice her serve before this tournament. Despite the setback, she maintained a degree of optimism, stating, "Given the situation, it wasn't that terrible."

For Osorio, the win marked a breakthrough at Indian Wells, where she had never previously secured a main-draw victory. The Colombian will now face Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the second round.

Elsewhere, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova also suffered an early exit, falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to France's Varvara Gracheva. Kvitova, who returned to the WTA Tour last month after giving birth in July, remains without a win since her comeback.

Gracheva praised Kvitova after the match, calling her dual role as a mother and professional athlete "just amazing."
