Jennifer Hudson’s courtside date night with Common took an unexpected turn when she was hit by a stray basketball during an NBA game at Madison Square Garden on March 4.
The 43-year-old EGOT winner attended the New York Knicks vs. Golden State Warriors game with her boyfriend, rapper Common. During the second quarter, Knicks guard Miles “Deuce” McBride lunged for an out-of-bounds ball, colliding with Hudson’s seat.
The basketball appeared to bounce off Hudson’s head, and while Common tried to shield her, he accidentally knocked her glasses off instead. McBride quickly checked on the couple as announcers playfully called out Common’s failed attempt at protection.
The incident quickly went viral, with fans reacting online. “That boy ain’t protect a damn thing,” one person joked, while another wrote, “She expected Common to catch the ball, but he didn’t.”
Despite the moment, the couple remains strong, having confirmed their relationship in early 2024 after years of speculation. Their connection dates back to 2014, when they attended a charity event together, and they were later spotted at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game before collaborating on the 2022 film “Breathe”.
Common appeared on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” in January 2024, bringing flowers and describing Hudson as “one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met”.
Hudson, an EGOT winner, continues her career success, while Common is just one Tony Award away from joining her in the elite group.
