PESHAWAR:

Retired employees of the Capital Metropolitan Government Peshawar have not received their pension for the month of February, putting them in severe financial distress during the holy month of Ramazan.

In response to this situation, the Municipal Workers Union has threatened to hold protests against the provincial government.

The United Municipal Workers Union appealed to the Minister of Local Government and Secretary Local Government to initiate an independent inquiry by a neutral third party into the financial affairs of the Capital Metropolitan Government in Peshawar.

The Union demanded transparency to uncover the reasons behind the financial collapse of an institution that generates millions in revenue, leaving employees, pensioners, and public and local representatives in despair.

Despite clear directives from the provincial government that local funds should exclusively be used for salaries and pensions, the Metropolitan administration has blatantly ignored these orders, the Union said.

This disregard highlights the absence of the rule of law within the Capital Metropolitan Government, Peshawar, it added.

The Union has criticized the Provincial Minister and Secretary of Local Government for their inaction, accusing them of failing to address corruption and mismanagement that have driven the institution to the brink of bankruptcy.

Last week, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Finance Department released Rs1.15 billion for the payment of salaries and pensions to employees of 64 tehsil councils in the province.

Previously, the non-release of funds to these councils had resulted in delays in disbursing salaries and pensions, resulting in widespread protests.

The allocated funds cover the period from January to March of the current year, ensuring that employees receive their dues for the specified timeframe.
