British comedian and actor Matt Lucas, 50, has apologized to Millie Bobby Brown, 21, after she publicly called out media scrutiny of her appearance.
Lucas issued his response on Instagram after the Stranger Things star addressed the criticism of her looks in a makeup-free video on March 3. In his statement, Lucas expressed regret over how his comments had been perceived.
Lucas explained that his remark referenced Vicky Pollard, a character from his early 2000s sketch show Little Britain. He noted that Brown’s blonde hair and pink outfit in a recent photo reminded him of the character, prompting him to post Pollard’s catchphrase, “no but yeah but.” However, after media outlets described his post as an attack on Brown’s appearance, he clarified that this was not his intention.
“I thought you looked terrific, and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you,” Lucas stated, emphasizing that criticism “is not [his] style.” He expressed admiration for the actress and apologized for any unintended offense, adding, “I realize it has upset you, and for that, I apologize.”
Brown had earlier criticized specific media headlines for promoting body-shaming narratives, highlighting a Daily Mail article that claimed Lucas "took a savage swipe" at her. The actress stressed the impact of bullying in the media industry, especially on young women growing up in the spotlight.
Lucas later clarified that he “loves” Brown and had no malicious intent. The exchange has sparked discussions about the unfair scrutiny young celebrities face and how their changing appearances are often dissected by the media.
