President Donald Trump delivered his first address to Congress since returning to office, outlining his administration’s vision for the nation while igniting sharp partisan clashes. His speech, six weeks into a term that has already upended decades of US policy, underscored his combative approach and signaled his priorities for 2025.

Here are the major takeaways from Trump’s speech:

1. Al Green’s Protest and Democratic Opposition
Trump’s speech quickly turned chaotic when Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas interrupted him, shouting that the president had no mandate. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace fired back, yelling, “Sit your ass down!” but Green remained standing. House Speaker Mike Johnson eventually ordered the sergeant-at-arms to remove Green from the chamber.

Beyond Green’s outburst, Democrats staged a more subtle protest. Many female lawmakers, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, wore pink—a nod to past symbolic fashion protests, such as wearing white during Trump’s 2019 State of the Union to mark a century of women’s suffrage.

More vocal opposition came as Democratic lawmakers heckled Trump, waved protest signs, and walked out in defiance of his speech. Some of the signs read:

  • “MUSK STEALS”
  • “SAVE MEDICAID”
  • “PROTECT VETERANS”

Representative Rashida Tlaib even brought a whiteboard, scribbling messages like “NO KING” and “LIES” throughout Trump’s remarks.

2. Trump’s Tariffs and Economic Vision
Trump doubled down on his protectionist trade policies, defending his sweeping 25% tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico by declaring:

“Now it’s our turn.”

His remarks drew applause from Republicans but concern from some within his own party, as the tariffs had already triggered a stock market tumble. Democrats heckled Trump by shouting “Stock market!” as he spoke.

Trump also continued his economic blame game, criticizing former President Joe Biden for inflation and high egg prices, while offering little in the way of concrete solutions. He merely instructed his agriculture secretary, Brooke Rollins, to “do a good job on that.”

Elon Musk’s Role: Trump introduced Elon Musk as a key figure in his administration’s push to eliminate fraud in government spending, claiming Musk had identified “hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud”—a figure exceeding even official estimates.

3. Culture Wars and Immigration Crackdown
A large portion of Trump’s speech focused on social and cultural issues, as he leaned into hot-button conservative topics, including:

  • Opposing transgender rights
  • Mocking “they/them” pronouns
  • Attacking diversity, equity, and inclusion programs

Trump celebrated his crackdown on migration, blaming Biden for “insane and very dangerous open border policies” and declaring his current policies the “most sweeping border and immigration crackdown in American history.”

His remarks sent Republicans into a frenzy, leading to chants of “Trump! Trump! Trump!” from the GOP side of the aisle.

4. Trump’s Policy Agenda and Tax Plans
Trump outlined his legislative priorities, signaling that a major tax and spending bill would be a key focus of his administration. Among his proposals:

  • Cutting taxes, including eliminating taxes on tips and overtime
  • Repealing the CHIPS and Science Act, which supports domestic semiconductor manufacturing

While Congressional Republicans support tax cuts, many are struggling to reconcile Trump’s proposals with the need for revenue.

5. Trump’s Feud with Democrats and His Base’s Adulation
Unlike previous presidents who used these speeches to offer bipartisan olive branches, Trump openly mocked and antagonized Democrats throughout.

He taunted them for refusing to clap, declaring:

“There’s nothing I can say that will make them smile.”

Democrats mocked Trump’s statements on government corruption, pointing at Elon Musk, who sat in the gallery as a billionaire adviser. Some even shouted “January 6th!” when Trump praised his pardons for rioters who stormed the Capitol.

Meanwhile, Republicans showered Trump with adulation, repeatedly jumping to their feet in applause. It had been months since Trump last spoke to a packed room of cheering supporters, and he clearly relished the moment.

6. Trump’s Remarks on Ukraine, the Panama Canal, and GreenlandTrump announced that Ukraine is ready to enter peace talks, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.

His jab at Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, calling her “Pocahontas”, prompted many Democrats to walk out in protest.

Trump revived old ambitions of bringing the Panama Canal and Greenland under US. control, declaring:

“We didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama. We’re taking it back.”

On Greenland, he was even more blunt:

“One way or another, we’re going to get it.”

With Democrats pushing back against his policies and Republicans rallying around his leadership without question, his address deepened political polarization and set the stage for a turbulent and contentious 2025.
