HYDERABAD:

Women rights activists, Rehana Gujjar Advocate, Ghufrana Arayeen, and Marvi Memon, have called upon the government to effectively enforce the laws preventing childhood and forced marriages.

Speaking at the Hyderabad Press Club, they emphasised the need for public awareness campaigns to educate communities about these laws and their implications.

The activists highlighted discrepancies between Sindh's child marriage laws and those in other provinces, but reaffirmed that under existing legislation, marriage under the age of 18 is illegal. They stressed that law enforcement agencies have the authority to intervene and prevent such marriages upon receiving reports.

Furthermore, the women leaders pointed out that child marriages remain prevalent among minority communities, underscoring the urgent need for greater awareness and enforcement. They warned that child marriages not only lead to severe health and economic hardships for the couple but also negatively impact their future children.
