The 97th Academy Awards took an unexpected turn when Halle Berry playfully kissed Adrien Brody on the red carpet, recreating their infamous 2003 Oscars moment. Back then, Brody had stunned the audience by kissing Berry after winning Best Actor for The Pianist.
This time, Berry took the lead, walking up to Brody and his partner, Georgina Chapman, before saying, “Sorry, Georgina, I gotta do it,” and planting a quick kiss on him. She followed up with a hug and another apology to Chapman, who appeared to take the moment in stride, clapping and smiling.

The internet was quick to react, with social media users expressing mixed opinions. One X (formerly Twitter) user commented, “In front of the partner is crazy,” while another wrote, “LMAO. Don’t know if to call it payback, nostalgia, or recreation.”

Berry later spoke to Variety, explaining her decision to recreate the moment. “That was one hell of a night for him, and for me as well. To be a part of his moment again… I had to pay him back,” she said.
Brody, who has addressed the 2003 kiss in past interviews, previously reflected on how times have changed. “We live in a very conscious time, which is a wonderful thing. Nothing I ever do is done with the intention of making anyone feel bad,” he told Variety earlier this year.
Despite the divided opinions, the Oscars’ official X account acknowledged the moment, posting, “A reunion 22 years in the making,” while Berry herself shared the clip with the caption, “Surpriseee @adrienbrody!! I had to get some payback.” Whether seen as a lighthearted callback or an awkward moment, Berry and Brody’s Oscars kiss saga continues to make headlines.
