A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking action against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Mian Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz over the alleged misuse of public funds for personal and political promotion.
Petitioner Ashba Kamran submitted that Nawaz Sharif, despite being a member of the National Assembly (MNA) after the 2024 general elections, has been utilising Punjab government resources for political activities.
She contended that this practice is unconstitutional and violates the Supreme Court's directives.
The petition names former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz, the Chief Secretary Punjab, and other officials as respondents. Kamran argued that Punjab's public funds should be allocated for welfare projects and job creation rather than being used for political branding and dynastic promotion.
She emphasized that in a time of economic hardship, when taxpayers are burdened by rising inflation and unemployment, such misuse of funds is unacceptable.
The petitioner also highlighted the Supreme Court's ruling of September 2, 2022, stating that the Punjab government's failure to prevent misuse of funds amounts to contempt of court.
Kamran requested the court to declare Nawaz Sharif's actions unconstitutional and direct National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to take legal action against him for allegedly exceeding his constitutional authority.
