John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series, set to begin filming in the UK this summer

John Lithgow has officially been cast as Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series.

The 79-year-old actor confirmed his role as the iconic Hogwarts headmaster, following in the footsteps of Michael Gambon and Richard Harris, who portrayed Dumbledore in the original film franchise.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Lithgow revealed that the decision was not easy due to the long-term commitment the role demands. “It’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life,” he said. “I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”

The HBO Harry Potter reboot aims to be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book series, featuring an entirely new cast. The network confirmed that production will commence in the UK in summer 2025, with a potential release in 2026.

Casting rumors continue to circulate, with reports suggesting that British actor Paapa Essiedu is being considered for the role of Professor Severus Snape, a character previously portrayed by the late Alan Rickman. HBO has yet to confirm these reports, stating only that details will be revealed as deals are finalized.

The series promises to introduce Harry Potter to a new generation while maintaining the legacy of the original films, which will remain available for streaming.
