Julianne Moore has expressed shock after learning that her children’s book, Freckleface Strawberry, has been banned from schools run by the Department of Defense (DoD) under the Trump administration.

The book, which tells the story of a young girl learning to embrace her freckles, has been removed as part of a broader effort to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion-related materials in schools.

Moore called the ban “galling” and questioned what in her book could be considered controversial.

“It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle but are united by our humanity and our community.”

Moore, whose father was a Vietnam veteran, attended DoD-run schools as a child. She expressed disappointment that current students in similar situations would no longer have access to her book.

“I never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right.”

According to a memo sent to parents, the DoD is conducting a review of library books, focusing on topics related to gender ideology and diversity. Books deemed in violation of Trump’s executive orders on "radical indoctrination" are being removed.

Moore’s announcement sparked strong reactions from fellow celebrities. Michelle Pfeiffer questioned the decision, asking, “Are you joking? How can we get this book?” Chloë Grace Moretz called it shocking and asked, “Literally why?” Halle Berry described the move as frightening, while Andy Cohen called it “an absolute joke,” criticizing the party of free speech for banning books. Ellen Pompeo weighed in with sarcasm, saying, “I’d say what a bunch of donkeys, except I love donkeys.”
