Political and religious leaders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have urged the federal government to immediately engage with the Afghan government to combat the menace of terrorism.
According to Express News, a consultative meeting of political and religious leaders was held at the Chief Minister's House under the chairmanship of K-P Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Saturday. The meeting — titled "National Unity Against Terrorism — was convened on the instructions of PTI founder Imran Khan.
The participants unanimously agreed that peace in Pakistan is directly linked to peace in Afghanistan. They emphasized the need to start government-level negotiations with Afghanistan as soon as possible to address terrorism. They agreed to work together to promote sectarian harmony in the country.
It was also acknowledged that ensuring peace is of utmost national interest, and serious efforts are required to find a sustainable resolution to the Kurram district issue, which, despite being regional, could turn into a national concern.
The role of the provincial government, particularly the chief minister, in handling the Kurram issue was highly appreciated. The participants stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law, ensuring constitutional supremacy, and protecting human rights.
They agreed that national reconciliation and political stability are essential for peace, prosperity, and economic development in the country. It was decided to bring all political parties together on this agenda. They agreed to form a committee to establish communication with all political parties.
Earlier, the objectives and goals of the meeting were outlined by CM's Adviser for Information Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, while K-P Minister for Religious Affairs Sahibzada Adnan Qadri highlighted the role of scholars and spiritual leaders.
The CM briefed the participants on the provincial government's efforts regarding talks with Afghanistan and resolving the Kurram district dispute. The chief minister and the adviser were praised for organizing this consultative meeting on such an important national issue.
The participants emphasized that this meeting lays a strong foundation for lasting peace, the eradication of terrorism, and national reconciliation. They agreed that similar consultative sessions should be held at the district level across the country.
The Milli Yakjehti Council pledged to provide full support to the provincial government in this effort. Religious scholars will guide the public through Friday sermons on the importance of peace and countering terrorism.
The participants also vowed to carry forward the message of peace nationwide. They expressed their commitment to eliminating terrorism and fostering a secure environment as a shared responsibility.
