India's opener and vice captain Shubman Gill became the fastest batsman to reach 2500 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs) on Wednesday, surpassing former South African cricketer Hashim Amla.
Playing his 50th ODI against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Gill reached the milestone in the 10th over of India’s innings, driving a boundary off Gus Atkinson.
Amla had previously held the record, reaching the mark in his 53rd ODI innings.
Gill, 25, has been in top form throughout the series, scoring 87 runs in the opener in Nagpur on February 6 and 60 runs in the second ODI in Cuttack on February 9.
He scored 111 runs off 102 balls before being bowled out by Adil Rashid.
With an average exceeding 60 in ODIs, he aims to capitalize on his start in the third match to help India complete a series sweep before heading to Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Ahead of the match, Gill also climbed to No. 2 in the ICC ODI batting rankings, surpassing India captain Rohit Sharma.
Babar, 30, is also on the verge of a record, needing 33 runs in Pakistan’s ODI against South Africa in Karachi to become the fastest batter to reach 6000 ODI runs.
Gill made his ODI debut for India against New Zealand on January 31, 2019, at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
