A Republican congressman has introduced new legislation aimed at bolstering US President Donald Trump’s renewed efforts to acquire Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, while also proposing a new name for the island: “Red, White, and Blueland.”
Georgia Representative Buddy Carter announced the Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025, stating that the bill would support Trump’s national security goals by facilitating the territory’s transition into US control. The proposal, which sets a six-month deadline for official documentation updates, would require the US Department of the Interior to formally adopt the new name in federal records.
“America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” Carter said in a statement to the New York Post.
“President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our negotiator-in-chief inks this monumental deal.”
The bill must first be assigned to a congressional committee for review before being put to a vote in the House of Representatives.
Greenlanders Overwhelmingly Oppose US Takeover
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of purchasing Greenland since December, arguing that American ownership of the Arctic island would enhance US national security. Last month, Trump sent his son, Donald Trump Jr., to Greenland in a publicity effort promoting the proposal.
However, the vast majority of Greenland’s population opposes joining the US According to a poll conducted last month by Danish newspaper Berlingske and Greenlandic daily Sermitsiaq, 85% of Greenlanders reject the idea of becoming part of the US Only 6% supported it, while 9% remained undecided.
Denmark has repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale and that it will remain a part of the Danish kingdom.
Danish Campaign Mocks US Move with “Denmarkification” Effort
In response to Trump’s push for Greenland, Danish citizens have launched a crowdfunding campaign called “Denmarkification” in a satirical effort to raise $1 trillion to buy the US state of California.
According to the campaign website, California would be renamed “New Denmark,” and one of its most iconic attractions, Disneyland, would be rebranded as “Hans Christian Andersenland.”
Google Maps Displays “Gulf of America” After Trump’s Order
Meanwhile, Trump’s push to rename geographic locations gained further traction this week as Google Maps displayed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” within the US
The renaming followed an executive order signed by Trump on January 20, titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness.” Trump has argued that the name should reflect the US rather than Mexico.
While US -based users of Google Maps now see the name “Gulf of America,” international users still see “Gulf of Mexico” in most locations, including Mexico and Cuba.
The legislative push to acquire Greenland, along with Trump’s broader geographic rebranding efforts, continues to spark international debate and diplomatic tensions.
