Duolingo shocked fans by announcing the death of its beloved – or notorious – mascot, Duo the Owl.
The language-learning platform shared the news on Instagram, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead.” The company assured followers that authorities are investigating, urging them to respect Dua Lipa during this difficult time.
As speculation swirls, fans are pointing fingers at Canadian rapper Drake, referencing past online jabs between the artist and the Duolingo brand. TikToker Jax delved into Duo’s recent social media activity, highlighting past digs at Drake, particularly in the lead-up to Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show. One viral post featured Duo joking, “I’m glad I’m not the only owl on this list with a BBL,” a reference many linked to rumors about Drake undergoing surgery.
The conspiracy deepened when Duolingo responded to a fan’s comment about accountability, writing, “Authorities are looking into a Canadian rapper currently.” The brand also dropped a cryptic reference to Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, replying, “Please check cell block one.”
Duolingo later teased, “Keep an eye on our social channels as we uncover the shocking (and possibly absurd) truth behind his untimely demise.” While the cause of Duo’s "death" remains unclear, the viral marketing stunt has certainly captured the internet’s attention.
