The Philadelphia Eagles dismantled the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59, ending their bid for an unprecedented third consecutive championship.
The Chiefs, competing in their fifth Super Bowl in six seasons, entered the game with high expectations. However, the Eagles dominated in New Orleans, particularly on defence, which reinforced its status as the NFL’s best this season.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes endured a tough night, sacked six times and throwing two interceptions as the Chiefs struggled to find momentum.
The Eagles, securing their second Super Bowl title after their 2018 victory, stifled the Chiefs' offence despite limiting the impact of star running back Saquon Barkley.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts silenced his critics with a 46-yard touchdown pass that sealed the win. His performance earned him the Super Bowl MVP award, a stark contrast to his efforts two years ago when the Eagles fell short against the Chiefs in a 38-35 loss.
“I’ve learned from every experience, good and bad,” Hurts said after the game. “I couldn’t do this without my teammates. Defence wins championships, and they showed up tonight.”
Donald Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend the Super Bowl, while Taylor Swift was among the high-profile spectators, supporting Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. However, the Chiefs never found their rhythm, registering just one first down in the first half.
Hurts opened the scoring with a ‘tush push’ touchdown, followed by a Jake Elliott field goal. Philadelphia’s defence then took control, with Cooper DeJean returning an interception for a 38-yard touchdown. Mahomes, who had gone 298 pass attempts without an interception, threw another moments later, leading to an A.J. Brown touchdown.
The Eagles extended their lead after halftime, with DeVonta Smith catching a long touchdown pass from Hurts. As Philadelphia’s advantage grew, their fans mockingly imitated Kansas City’s Tomahawk Chop chant.
Mahomes found Xavier Worthy for a touchdown before Elliott added two more field goals. Late scores from DeAndre Hopkins and Worthy reduced the deficit, but the game had already slipped away from the Chiefs.
“Credit to the Eagles, they outplayed us,” Mahomes admitted. “The turnovers were costly, and I take full responsibility for that. It’s tough to recover from mistakes like that in a Super Bowl.”
The Eagles’ dominant display ensured Kansas City’s pursuit of history fell short, marking the end of a potential dynasty while cementing Philadelphia’s place at the top of the NFL.
