Pakistan's head coach, Aqib Javed, has defended the inclusion of all-rounder Fahim Ashraf in the national squad, stating that critics are entitled to their opinions regarding his selection.

Speaking to the media, Javed emphasized that the decision to give Ashraf an opportunity was based on his potential to contribute both with the bat and the ball. He also stated that should the need arise, Ashraf would be utilized for his bowling skills as well.

Addressing the fast-paced evolution of modern cricket, Javed noted that, particularly in home conditions, Pakistan should aim for totals exceeding 300 runs, given the rapid nature of the game as he attributed the fast scoring trends to the influence of T20 cricket, where teams often surpass the 200-run mark with relative ease.

Looking ahead, Javed highlighted the upcoming Tri-Nation Series as an important preparatory event for Pakistan, especially in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy.

The team is set to begin their Champions Trophy campaign against New Zealand, marking the start of a significant journey.

On the selection of the national team, the former fast bowler assured that the team was formed with a well-balanced combination, designed to offer both fast bowlers and spin all-rounders when needed.

The aim, according to Javed, is to ensure that the team is equipped to tackle any situation that arises during the crucial series.

Fahim Ashraf's selection for ICC Champions Trophy faced severe criticism from all corners, as fans and former Pakistani cricketers questioned both his selection and the criteria that led to it.

Former Pakistan captain and swing legend Wasim Akram expressed his concerns over Faheem Ashraf’s selection in Pakistan's ICC Champions Trophy squad, labelling it as “out of the blue.”

Akram highlighted that Ashraf’s performance in the first 20 matches had been subpar, with a bowling average of 100 and a batting average of just 9. He questioned the reasoning behind his inclusion, adding, “What else could I say then?”

Previously, former captain and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif had also questioned Ashraf’s inclusion in the squad, criticising the selection committee for inadequate preparation and describing their efforts as incomplete.

He further raised doubts over the return of Khushdil Shah and Ashraf, who had shown limited presence in the system, and criticised the unexpected inclusion of certain players with large gaps in their international careers.
