Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne, a New Orleans native, took to social media to announce that he would not be attending Super Bowl LIX. Instead, he teased that he has been working on something "very special" for his fans, which he plans to reveal soon.

Wayne’s announcement follows the news that Los Angeles rapper Kendrick Lamar would headline the Super Bowl halftime show. This decision sparked disappointment among some fans, who felt that Wayne, given his New Orleans roots, was "snubbed" by not being chosen. In a previous Instagram post, Wayne expressed that being overlooked "broke" him, admitting, "I’m just trying to put myself back together." For years, Wayne had expressed his desire to perform during the Super Bowl halftime show, viewing it as the pinnacle of his career.

The Super Bowl halftime show this year will mark Lamar's second appearance, following his performance alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, and Eminem in 2022. Despite his initial disappointment, Wayne has since cleared the air, revealing in a recent appearance on the Skip Bayless Show that he had spoken with Lamar and "wished him all the best."

In a video posted just before Super Bowl LIX, Wayne confirmed he would not be attending the event but reassured his fans by saying, "I’ve got something special coming for you." He revealed that the surprise would be unveiled on Thursday, February 6. His fans are now eagerly anticipating what he has in store.
