Wayne’s announcement follows the news that Los Angeles rapper Kendrick Lamar would headline the Super Bowl halftime show. This decision sparked disappointment among some fans, who felt that Wayne, given his New Orleans roots, was "snubbed" by not being chosen. In a previous Instagram post, Wayne expressed that being overlooked "broke" him, admitting, "I’m just trying to put myself back together." For years, Wayne had expressed his desire to perform during the Super Bowl halftime show, viewing it as the pinnacle of his career.
The Super Bowl halftime show this year will mark Lamar's second appearance, following his performance alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, and Eminem in 2022.
