LAHORE:

Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Malik Ahmad Bhachar on Tuesday accused the government of misinterpreting former prime minister Imran Khan's letter to the army chief, asserting that there was nothing objectionable in the communication.

He said Khan and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stood in solidarity with the Pakistan Army.

Speaking at a press conference, Bhachar defended Khan's move, arguing that the letter had merely expressed support for the military.

He added that the role of the establishment in national affairs could not be ignored and PTI had never denied a past meeting of its Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan.

Bhachar opposed the recently passed 26th Constitutional Amendment, calling it a coup d'état. He claimed the amendment was aimed at influencing verdicts against PTI by appointing three additional judges to the Islamabad High Court. He argued that the amendment had been passed with ill intent, asserting that constitutional amendments should only be made by a party with a two-thirds majority, either independently or with allies, rather than relying on turncoats.

He alleged that following the amendment's passage, the government had taken its first "mala fide action" by issuing an executive order to induct the judges.
