Kate Winslet is allegedly the A-list actress that no longer speaks to Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon has admitted that an A-list actress no longer speaks to her after a speech she gave at a UK awards show went wrong. While promoting her new comedy You’re Cordially Invited, Witherspoon told PEOPLE that she’s still “haunted” by the incident, which left the unnamed star unimpressed.

According to Witherspoon, she was asked to present the actress with an award but misread the event’s tone. “I thought it was like a roast,” she said. “The tone was British and elegant and classy, and I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?!’” The actress admitted that the joke did not land well and that the person in question “doesn’t talk to me anymore.”

Internet users quickly speculated that the actress in question is Kate Winslet.  In 2007, Witherspoon presented Winslet with an award at the Bafta/LA Cunard Britannia Awards and made a joke about laser hair removal during her speech. She also shared an anecdote about Winslet ringing her doorbell asking for wine, adding that their past escapades were “too bawdy or tawdry or drunken to tell.”

Further fueling speculation, fans noted that Winslet and Witherspoon appeared on stage together at the 2016 Oscars but didn’t interact during their segment. Neither actress has publicly addressed the rumors, but Witherspoon admitted, “I had the wrong audience.”
