Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón has deactivated her X account following backlash over resurfaced tweets, including one in which she insulted Emilia Pérez co-star Selena Gomez. The controversy began when social media users uncovered past racist, Islamophobic, and fatphobic posts, leading to widespread criticism.
Among the resurfaced tweets was a comment about Muslim immigration in Spain, where Gascón called for banning religions. Other posts referenced the 2020 murder of George Floyd in ways many deemed offensive.
As outrage grew, another tweet surfaced in which she insulted Gomez, writing, “She’s a rich rat who plays the poor bastard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife.” The tweet was a reply to a report about Gomez and Hailey Bieber posing together.

Facing mounting backlash, Gascón deactivated her account and issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, apologizing but also suggesting the controversy was an attempt to sabotage her Oscar campaign. “It is clear that there is something very dark behind it,” she wrote, adding, “I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family.”
The scandal has put Emilia Pérez and its distributor, Netflix, in the spotlight just weeks before the Academy Awards. While some supporters defend Gascón, others believe her resurfaced comments could overshadow her historic nomination.
