Newborn found alive in plastic bag at a construction site in Lahore

Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz took notice and directed the Child Protection Bureau to take custody of the infant

A newborn baby was discovered alive inside a plastic bag at an under-construction house in Lahore’s Gajjumata area, prompting swift action by rescue teams and authorities.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, a distress call reported the presence of an abandoned infant near LDA Road, Express News reported.

Upon arrival, responders found the baby wrapped inside a plastic bag. Despite the circumstances, the baby girl was alive and immediately transported to the Children’s Hospital for medical evaluation and care.

Following the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took notice and directed the Child Protection Bureau to take custody of the infant.

Chairperson Sarah Ahmed confirmed that the bureau’s team was dispatched to the hospital to ensure the baby’s proper care.

"The child will receive the best possible care and nurturing under the protection of the bureau," said Ahmed, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable children.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the baby ended up at the site and to trace any individuals involved in abandoning the newborn.

On the other hand, Advisor to K-P Chief Minister on Health, Ihtesham Khan, UNCEF Chief of Field Office, Radoslaw Rzehak and UNICEF Health Team Lead for K-P, Dr Inamullah Khan inaugurated a sick newborn care unit at Women and Children Hospital Abbottabad.

Speaking on the occasion, health advisor highlighted the importance of quality newborn care to address high newborn mortality in the province.

He thanked UNICEF for supporting the newborn care agenda, adding that taking UNICEF model, K-P govt is planning to establish quality newborn care units in every district level hospital.

Radoslaw Rzehak said that UNICEF is supporting govt in health and nutrition as well as education. He assured continued support. Dr. Inamullah said that this is state-of-the-art unit having the capacity to provide quality newborn care services to adjoining districts of Abbottabad as well.
