The superstar Abel Tesfaye has officially closed the final chapter of his persona as The Weeknd with the release of his latest album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, which dropped on Friday (Jan. 31) via XO and Republic Records.
The album was initially set for release last Friday, Jan. 24, but was postponed due to the wildfire crisis in Los Angeles. In response, he donated $1 million to aid relief efforts. He also canceled the one-night-only album release stadium show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which had been scheduled for Jan. 25.
Hurry Up Tomorrow serves as the third and concluding installment of his recent trilogy, following After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022). The LP was introduced with three singles: "Dancing in the Flames," "Timeless" featuring Playboi Carti, and "São Paulo" with Anitta. "Timeless" reached No. 3 on the *Billboard Hot 100* in October.
The Canadian-Ethiopian musician is also set to make his feature film debut in the psychological thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, which accompanies the album. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, the film also stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. The Weeknd, alongside frequent collaborator Daniel Lopatin (also known as Oneohtrix Point Never), will compose the film’s score. Lionsgate is set to release the movie in theaters worldwide on May 16.
It’s a symbolic conclusion to The Weeknd’s journey, 14 years after it all started. In 2011, he released three mixtapes—House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence—which were later remastered and compiled into *Trilogy*, an album released by his XO label and Republic Records in the following year.
